Gemsoft Internet setup instructions
For customers who joined after the 16th March 1999

 

To set up the modem correctly

  • Click the Windows Start button, then Settings, then Control Panel and then the System icon.
  • Select the Device Manager tab to show your hardware list.
  • Select the Ports (COM & LPT) section.
  • Highlight the COM port that your modem uses and select its Properties.
  • Select the Port Settings tab.
  • Change the Bits per second speed to 115200 in the pull down window.
  • Change the Flow Control from Xon/Xoff to Hardware.
  • Click OK to all windows

 

To install dial up networking

  • Click the Windows Start button, then Settings, then Control Panel and then add\remove programs.
  • Click the Windows Set-up tab.
  • In the Programs window double click on Communications.
  • Place checkmark in Dial-up Networking.
  • Click OK then click apply.
  • Give network a name (any name will do).
  • Restart machine.

 

To add a new connection

  • Click the Windows Start button, then Programs, then Accessories and then Dial-up Networking.
  • Double click on Make New Connection.
  • Change name of connection to Gemsoft Internet and then click next.
  • Type area code (if req.) and telephone number 0845 120 2222, yhen click Next, then click Finish.

 

To set-up Gemsoft Internet

  • Right click on Gemsoft Internet, then select Properties, then Server Types.
  • Remove tick from alongside Log on to network.
  • Remove ticks from alongside NetBEUI & IPXSPX compatible.
  • Click on TCP/IP settings.
  • Ensure Server Assigned IP address is selected.
  • Ensure Server assigned Name Server Addresses is selected.
  • Ensure Use IP header compression is ticked.
  • Ensure Use default gateway on remote network is ticked.
  • Click OK then select OK again.
  • Now right click on the Internet Globe icon on the Desktop and select Properties.
  • Select connection tab
  • Tick connect to the Internet as needed and choose Gemsoft Internet in box below
  • Tick connect through a proxy server and click on settings button
  • HTTP: address is http://www-cache.gemsoft.net and port no is 80
  • Place tick in use same server for all protocols and click OK
  • Select navigation and set start page address to http://www.gemsoft.net
  • Click apply then OK
  • Click start button, then settings, then control panel, then network
  • If TCP/IP is not listed click add, then protocol, then add, now click on Microsoft and select TCP/IP from list on right hand side now click OK
  • Now restart your computer
  • To use Gemsoft Internet just double click on the Internet globe icon
  • Click next
  • Select current then next
  • Enter user name and password and check telephone number is 0845 120 2222
  • Press connect

 

To set-up Mail and News servers

  • POP3 mail server is email.gemsoft.net
  • SMTP mail server is smtp.gemsoft.net
  • News server is news.gemsoft.net

·         Your password is:___________________________

 

Additional settings

For certain operating systems you are required to enter the DNS server IP addresses (name server addresses). These are as follows:

  • Primary Name Server: 195.10.253.11
  • Secondary Name Server: 195.10.254.4
