Your
Business & the Internet
Why
choose Gemsoft?
At Gemsoft, our aim
is to provide a fast, helpful & reliable service. We are not the
cheapest around – if we were, we’d attract more custom, but our service
would suffer as a result. We feel that it is far more important to offer
our customer helpful support, and a fast, reliable connection. We think
that in the long run, you would prefer it that way too.

Permanent
Connections
Pricing is difficult
to give because of the huge number of variables. These are mainly the
distance between you and one of our POPs and which Telco can provide the
service.
As a guide only a 64k
point to point circuit provided within 5Km of our Sheffield POP within a
Yorkshire Cable area would cost a mere £1,000 install and £4,900 per annum
including fully managed router (exc VAT).
The same example but
provided by a BT 64k circuit would cost £ 1,000 install and £ 6,200 rental.
Leased Line 64k-2Mb
This
is the proper way to do it. High performance no excuse Internet access as
it should be.If you are close to one of our three Points of Presence
(POP's) you may benefit by having a full 2Mb circuit with one of the
options below.
- Limited Bandwidth 2Mb
cct -
the bandwidth down the circuit is limited by ourselves to whatever
you want 64k-2Mb. Low latency and easy upgrade. If provided by a
local Telco can prove cheaper than a 128k circuit although the setup
costs are higher.
- Bursting 2Mb cct - Agreed normal
bandwidth (e.g. 256k) but allowed to briefly burst to full 2Mb.
- Pay as you go 2Mb cct - Full unrestricted 2Mb
circuit. Simply pay for the bandwidth you actually use four weeks in
arrears.
Bandwidth Only
You
arrange the circuit to one of our POP's and just buy the bandwidth you
require. Split bandwidth (e.g. 2Mb UK and 128k international) available
only from our Telehouse POP.
Web
Hosting (Virtual Web
server)

more available upon request. Choose either FTP or Front-page 2000 Server
Extensions.

around 25Mb of space on our server for £100 ex VAT per year. The amount of
space is flexible, so although 25Mb is a lot, if you find you do need more

The Internet
and your business
Internet use is
growing quickly. Email is fast, inexpensive, and can be sent without
leaving your desk, More and more companies are developing home pages
advertising their goods and services. Although the payoff is uncertain at
the moment, there is no doubt that the Internet is growing, and it is
extremely likely that within the next few years, companies without an
Internet presence will be in the minority.
Even if you have no
immediate plans to establish your company on the Internet, it is certainly
worth being aware of what is involved, and of some of the pitfalls – you
may be surprised at how simple it actually is.
Making
your presence known
The biggest challenge
for any company looking to benefit from the Internet is that of
identification. Unlike the real world, you can’t hang a sign outside your
premises stating where you are. So how can your customers find you?
- One way is by using a
Search Engine – you type in a keyword, and your computer displays a
list of corresponding websites. However, this method can be very hit
and miss – it depends very much on the user searching for the right
keyword, and it also brings up a handy list of your competitors if
they don’t find you.
- Alternatively, you can
just let people know your website address. You can also print your
website and email addresses on your stationary and advertisements, but
the chances of someone having these items to hand when they’re looking
are quite slim. And the addresses provided by your Internet Service
Provider (ISP) aren’t likely to be very memorable. Typically, you
would have something like www.yourcompany.ispdomain.co.uk, or worse,
home.ispdomain.co.uk/~yourcompany. Remember also, that your customer
has to type it in exactly or they won’t find you.
So how do you ensure
that your customers can easily find you?
The best way is to
ensure that your customer’s can either remember your address, or get it
right within a couple of guesses.
