Check to see if your domain is available

First things first, lets find out if your domain name is available, just type your desired domain name into the field below. Simply type anything, but don't forget the correct syntax to use is "yourcompany.co.uk" or "yourcompany.com" If your desired domain is unavailable you could try putting a dash in the name, sometimes this can help you, for example"your-company.co.uk"

.com .co.uk .net .org - accepted syntax. Do not enter "www" before your choice.

Domain name explained

What is a domain name? To understand domain names, you initially need to understand how web addresses are made up. Taking www.gemsoft.co.uk as an example:

‘www’ indicates that the address is a world-wide web site

‘gemsoft’ is our domain name

‘co.uk’ indicates a commercial organisation in the UK. Alternatively, we could have used ‘.com’.

This is a perfect domain name for Gemsoft, and the chances are that this address is the one that most of our customers would try first. Not only that, but it also looks a great deal more professional than an ISP designated site address. Ideally, your domain name should be similar.

How do you register a domain name?

Domain names are controlled by a central governing body, who will register any domain name you wish, provided it isn’t already in use.

The problem here lies in the fact that Internet domain names are unique (a name can only be used once), and are assigned on a first come, first served basis. And with approximately 85,000 new domain names registered each month, there’s a distinct possibility that someone else may register your company name as an Internet domain name before you decide to establish an Internet presence. Once a domain name is reserved by registration with InterNIC, it is taken: because there can be only one registered owner of a domain name, if someone else gets there first, you must choose a different domain name.

With this in mind, if you have not already registered an Internet domain name, we recommend that you register your trademark or trade name as a domain name now, if it is still available. This is the case even if you have no immediate plans to set-up a company website.

What do you need?

All you need to do is let us know that you wish to register a domain name. You don’t need any connection to the Internet at all, although obviously your domain name will remain redundant until you make use of it.
